William “Bill” E. Bender, age 79, of Soldiers Grove and formerly of Viola, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his home on Friday, September 25, 2020. He was born on June 1, 1941, at his family home in the Township of Kickapoo to the late Ival and Verda (Harris) Bender. He graduated from Viola High School where he played football and basketball. Following graduation, Bill moved to Rockford, Illinois where he worked for Barber Coleman as a machinist. He married his high school sweetheart, Ann Larson, on September 6, 1961. They later moved back to Viola and owned and operated Bill and Ann’s Place, later purchasing a second tavern called Bill’s Place 2. They later sold those taverns and purchased Viola Standard Gas Station, which they turned into Viola Quick Stop. While he owned the taverns, Bill was known for his softball teams and for the cigars he smoked while he pitched. He had a love for classic cars and had an impressive collection of his own. He had a group of friends he enjoyed shaking dice, playing golf and sharing a few drinks at Kickapoo Creekside. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events when he was able to. He was an avid bowler in the 1970’s and bowled a 300 at the Viroqua Bowling Alley. He was a loving dad.

Survivors include his children: Shelly Bender of West Salem, Mark (Jill) Bender of Soldiers Grove; five grandchildren: Chloe, Cooper, Keegan, Alex, and Zack; his sister: Beverly Rudie; several nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ann and his brother-in-law Don Rudie.

A public graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2020, at the Viola Cemetery. Pastor Pam Harkema will officiate. Guests are encouraged to wear face-masks and bring their own chair.
