George married Mary Ann Sefer 19 Apr 1860 in Buchanan County, Missouri. George and Mary Ann were the parents of two children:
1. Mary Ann born 21 Jan 1861 CA married (#1) Henry Bruner and (#2) Joseph H. Ernst
2. Baby Boy born in CA
The story passed down through the family is that Mary Ann was a widow of a Civil War soldier when she married George. They had moved to California and had just had their second child, a son, when her "dead husband" turned up looking for his wife. George had this union dissolved and took his daughter, Mary Ann, back to the Kansas Territory with him. The baby boy was too young to travel and was left with his mother. No other information has been passed down about this baby boy.
George remarried to Clara Balzhauser and were the parents of five children:
1. Katherine (Katie) Mary born 1869 married George P. Grindel
2. Anna Mary born 15 Nov 1871 married Henry C. Folz
3. Agnes Mary born 1875 married John J. Cosgrove
4. Caroline Mary born 1879 married Charles W. Kelly
5. John Frederick born 1881 (adopted after death of parents)
Because George's first marriage was dissolved, the Catholic church and neighbors considered his oldest daughter, Mary Ann, illegitimate. She helped raised her four sisters after the death of step-mother Clara in 1882, also kept house for her father, and had a difficult life.
George owned 25.5 acres of property in the Quindaro area of the Kansas Territory in Wyandotte County. The census lists his occupation as a farmer.
George passed away 14 Nov 1887 at the age of 55 and is buried at Saint John's Catholic Cemetery in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas.∼
Aged 56 yrs.
