After the war, he graduated from University of North Carolina Law School, in 1949, was a lawyer in private practice and was a assistant general counsel to the United States House of Representatives, (1951-52). He also was solicitor of Duplin County, North Carolina, General Court, (1954-58) and a Duplin County, judge, (1958-60). In 1961 he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1977. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law.
