Thomas John "Cookie" Matalik, 76, of Burgettstown, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011, in his home.

He was born April 5, 1935, in Burgettstown, son of the late George and Helen Stefura Matalik.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Matalik was employed by Jones & Laughlin Steel in Aliquippa.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from June 1954 to June 1956.

Mr. Matalik was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown, Kucher-Saska Veterans of Foreign Wars and Burgettstown Italian Club.

He enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball with his brothers, bowling and hook with his friends.

Mr. Matalik tended to the high school ball fields for years, keeping them in shape for upcoming games. He was a fan of all sports and had an opinion on sports that was never wrong, which any of his friends at the clubs can attest.

Known as "Pappy, " he was a loyal and committed father and grandfather, who would routinely visit his family daily to give hugs and kisses. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are two daughters, Michelle Lynn Matalik Carnes, wife of Thomas of Burgettstown and Tammy Renee Matalik of Monongahela; three grandchildren, Coty Gene, Cassandra Leigh and Victoria Caley Carnes; three brothers, Robert Matalik Sr., husband of Freddie of Burgettstown, Aemil "Birdie" Matalik of Burgettstown and James Matalik, husband of Jean of Eldersville; sister Margaret Matalik Costner of Canonsburg; brother-in-law Zane Knauss of Columbia, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are his wife, Jeannette Saska Matalik; sister, Helen Matalik Knauss; and three brothers, George Matalik, Charles "Chicken" Matalik and Joseph "Doc" Matalik.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 10, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Burgettstown, with the Rev. Robert Connolly, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
