Son of Major Andrew and Mary McMahan Kitchen. He married Winifred Bays Jan. 9, 1843 and they had 10 children. He was raised on the Kitchen homestead near Willard in Carter County and was a farmer his whole life, later farming at Deer Creek. He was a Justice of the Peace for many years and was known far and wide as Squire Kitchen.

Andrew and his wife, Winnie, were originally buried in a Kitchen family cemetery near Deer Creek. Their graves were moved to Carter County Memory Gardens when Grayson Lake was created and the family cemetery, or access to it, would have been underwater. They are buried together under one stone.
