-----------------------
Homer was born in Bayard, Grant County WV in 1896, where his parents lived during the early years of their marriage. His father George was working as either a coal miner or logger during that period. The family moved back to a farm in Horse Shoe Run, Preston County, WV (his mother's home area), sometime during 1901. Homer entered the U.S. Army in late 1917 or early 1918 during W.W.I. He was assigned to work with horses and mules, and during training exercises, he was thrown from his mount and severely injured his head, receiving a bad concussion. He then spent some time in the Army Hospital at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, MS and was never sent overseas to Europe. He received a disability discharge from the Army on July 27, 1918, due to ear troubles, per documents found on FamilySearch.org.
After returning to West Virginia, Homer married Hazel P. Roth in 1920 and they bought a farm on a ridge next to Backbone Mountain, up above Silver Lake, Preston County, WV and near Gnegy Church, Garrett County, MD. On this farm they raised twelve children. However, his head problems became worse through the years and he was stricken with Parkinson's Disease. By the early 1950's he was unable to work and his sons took over all the farmwork with their mother. Homer and Hazel, along with their remaining son George, sold this farm in September 1961 and moved into a house out on the main road, U.S. Route 219. Homer died there in November of 1964 and Hazel also died there in July 1971.
