George A. Doel, a retired railway switch towerman, was born in Carbondale, Kansas. He was named after his grandfather, George Anthony Doel, who died at Carbondale in 1873.
Mr. Doel began his career with the Santa Fe Railway in De Soto, Kansas. He also worked for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and the Burlington Lines, some of the time in Nebraska and Rapid City, South Dakota. He had been in railroading 52 years nearly 30 of those with the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a telegrapher many years. He worked for the railway in Portland, and other parts of Oregon before coming to Seattle in 1935. He retired from duty at the Argo Tower in 1956. He was a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and the Union Pacific Old Timers' Club.
He married Arizona Heckert on March 21, 1907 at Olathe, Kansas. They had five children: Mary, Lester, Evalyn, Dorothy, and Marjorie. He later married Nina Gilmore. They had a son, George Eugene.
