Lloyd Donald Gilbert was born March 31, 1908 at Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Amos H. and Minnie E. McLain Gilbert. He grew up in Grinnell and attended the local schools. Early in his life he helped with the family farm and helped other area farmers in farm work.

On November 29, 1933 he was married to Myrtle L. Hockett in Grinnell and to this marriage were born three daughters: Lois, Pat and Mary. The couple continued to make their home in Grinnell and Lloyd served as foreman of the Gas Division of the Iowa Southern Utilities for 20 years until disability forced his early retirement in 1962. For a brief period following their marriage he was employed with the former York Lumber Company and the Johns-Mansville Insulation Company.

Lloyd was a member of the Grinnell First United Presbyterian Church. He was a Charter Member of Aerie #22545 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Grinnell and had been a member of the Grinnell IOOF Lodge in which he served in all the official chairs. Lloyd enjoyed keeping busy around his home and garden. His attention and skill in the upkeep of his home and garden were evident to all of his neighbors and friends. He enjoyed sharing his garden produce and was happy in performing repair jobs for his many friends.

Lloyd is survived by his wife Myrtle; his children, Mrs. Lois (Michael) Reid of Phoenix, AZ, Mrs Pat (Gary) Jolley of Ft. Worth, TX; and Mrs Mary (Ron) Adams of Malcom, IA. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; as well as his brother; Harry Gilbert of Newton, IA.

Lloyd died Tuesday morning, July 2, 1981, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, of an apparent heart condition. He was 73 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother and two sisters: Raymond Gilbert, Mrs. Lucille Thomas and Mrs. May Talbert.

The Rev. Daniel I. Ogata, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiated. Music was provided by Barbara Lein, organist and Darlene Switzer, vocalist. Pallbearers were Carl Binegar, Alfred Martens, Warren Miller, Floyd Sharp, Harold Schmidt and Steve Vrban. Honrary bearers were Cal Barnes, Vern Millgate, Robert Mitchell and Gerald Sampson. Burial was at Ivy Hill Cemetery.
