Martin was born 9 Dec 1839 in Braceville, Trumbull, Ohio. His parents were Julius Oviatt(1808-1846) and Editha S Lamphier(1818-1890). After Julius died, Editha married John Bosley(1812-1896).

Martin served with the 6th Ohio Cavalry Co K in the Civil War. During this time he wrote two diaries that are in the National Archives in Washington, DC. In his diary, he mentions writing letters to his parents. He also tells about his brother,David W Oviatt's(1843-1864)death. David served in the 82nd Ohio Infantry Co I.

Martin married Celia Oviatt(1841-1885) 26 Sept, 1867. They had two daughters, May Estelle Oviatt(1868-1952) and Ida Maud Oviatt(1871-1956).

After Celia died, Martin married Eleanor Jane Cowan(1837-1933) in 1887.

Martin died 29 March, 1904. He was buried in Braceville Center Cemetery, Trumbull, Ohio.
