Thelma has gone to "The Garden". If you would like to see her again the directions are found in John 3:16. Thelma Irene was born December 22, 1918 to Roy F. and Mamie D. (Kelly) Shew in Afton, Oklahoma. She married Herman Leo Baker March 7, 1937 in Oklahoma City. She is the mother of two sons, James and Bill, grandmother of 9 grandchildren, great grandmother of 13 great grandchildren, great great grandmother of 4 great great grandchildren and aunt of 8 nieces and nephews. Thelma was a wonderful Christian woman. She loved the Lord and was a faithful Sunday School teacher for 70 years. She taught at Trinity Baptist Church and Council Road Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Waterloo Road Baptist Church in Edmond and retired from teaching in 2008 at Emmaus Baptist Church in Moore. She referred to the "Sonshine Girls", her Sunday School Class at Emmaus, as "her girls". She loved her church family. Thelma loved to travel and joked that it was because of her Indian blood. She was a member of the Cherokee Tribe and a descendant of Nancy Ward, the Beloved Woman of the Cherokees. At 90 years of age, she lived alone, mowed her own yard, raised beautiful flowers, was a Moore Hospital volunteer, volunteered at the prayer room, participated in the Book Club and had a full schedule of summer trips planned. Truly a remarkable woman. Greeting Thelma in Heaven on May 12, 2009 were her husband of 61 years, Herman, son Bill, granddaughter Michelle, parents, and brothers Kelly and Ben Shew. We will miss her Sweet Sweet Spirit. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at Emmaus Baptist Church, 16001 S. Western, Moore, Oklahoma, at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, May 14, 2009 under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
