Succumbed to Effects of Apoplectic Stroke
Had Been in Failing Health for Several Years
Mrs. Lydia Southwell for many years a well known resident of Burlington passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. O. Todd, No. 513 South Garfield street, at 6:30 last evening. Mrs. Southwell had been in failing health for several years, but death ensured directly as the result of a stroke of apoplexy which she suffered Tuesday afternoon.
Lydia Uhl was born May 23, 1838, and for many years had been a resident of Southeastern Iowa. She was a woman of gracious and kindly personality and her friends will miss her greatly in the days to come. During the active years of her life she was a constant and devout member of the congregation of the Congregational church.
Her husband Calvin B. Southwell passed away fifteen years ago and of the six children who came to bless this union, three preceded the mother to the beyond. The survivors are W. B. Southwell of Des Moines, Mrs. H. O. Todd and Mrs. C. M. Waite of this city. The arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.

Mrs. Lydia Southwell passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. H. O. Todd, No. 513 South Garfield avenue, where she had been making her home for years, at 6:30 o'clock last evening. She had been in failing health for several years and when she suffered an apopleptic stroke yesterday noon it was apparent to her kin and friends that the end was not far distant. Lydia Uhl was born May 23, 1838, and had long been a resident of Iowa. Her husband, Calvin B. Southwell, passed away fifteen years ago and of the six children who came to bless the union three preceded the mother to the beyond. The survivors are W. B. Southwell, of Des Moines; Mrs. H. O. Todd and Mrs. C. M. Waite of this city. Mrs. Southwell was a member of the Congregational church and was held in high esteem by many friends. While her younger years had been take up with the cares of her family, she had always found the time and means to help and encourage others, and her great pleasure in life was being helpful to others. And thus many whom she might have forgotten will bless her memory in years to come. The arrangement for the funeral will be announced later.

Mrs. C. B. Southwell, well known in this city, passed away Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. O Todd, in Burlington, Iowa.
She formerly resided on a farm near Nelson. A sister, Mrs. Susan Hartwell, died here some years ago, and a brother, Rev. Uhl, was a former pastor of the St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city.
W. W. Harden of Nelson is a nephew.
