Dr. Joseph Theodore Morreale, 85, of Rancho Mirage, Calif. passed away October 28, 2009. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., the fifth of six children born to Sicilian immigrants. Dr. Joe, as he was lovingly called, was a graduate of USC's medical school in 1949. He served his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif. and after his release from the service, settled in Eagle Rock, Calif. where he had earlier attended Eagle Rock High School. He was called back into the Navy in 1952, serving another two years. After his discharge, he returned to Eagle Rock, continuing his practice until he moved to Palm Springs, Calif. in 1971 where he retired in 1988. He was active in every aspect of Desert Regional Medical Center during his time in private practice. Dr. Joe was a Diplomat on the American Board of Family Physicians from 1973-80; elected a Charter Fellow to the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1973; served on the Credentials Committee from 1974-77 and elected president of the Palm Springs Academy of Medicine from 1982-83. He was also an active speaker at numerous organizations in an effort to share his love of medicine and the human body. He helped educate over 2,000 students at Palm Springs and Cathedral City high schools by teaching Health classes there for several years, receiving the District's Shiny Apple Award in 2002. He was an active member of St. Theresa Church.
