Company E, 12th Louisiana Infantry. (MS Confederate Graves Registry)

Captain Evander M. Graham, Company E wrote home to his father-in-law on May 23, 1863 from Jackson, Mississippi that he saw Sergeant James Monroe Manning was "shot through the head, falling dead without saying a word." during the charge on Champion Hill. "I saw him a few moments before he received the fatal blow and he was at his post doing his duty, encouraging the men to keep steady in ranks, and to direct their aim well. He was killed when our regiment made a charge up a long slant upon the enemy, who were four regiments strong upon the top of the hill. We gained the hill top and ran the Feds from their position."
