Charles P. Hoover, the son of Absalom and Sarah Patty Hoover was born on a farm in Darke County, Ohio, May 21, 1851, and passed away following a long illness at his home near Covington on December 27, 1937, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 6 days.
Mr. Hoover last his father who was killed by a falling tree in 1856 and made his home for a time with Alfred Iddings and Clark Adams. His mother married later and he went to live in the new home where his step-father N. W. Furnance taught him the trade of stone cutter, and from the time he was 16 years of age worked at his trade until his retirement a number of years ago.
In 1903 he purchased the tract of land which now compromises the homestead and for many years operated a successful business known as the Hoover Quarries. When 18 years of age he was united in marriage with Sarah Curtis and to this union four children were given; Mary Belle, William C., Forrest R., and Clarence L. Under the pastorate of Rev. Dille, when the Covington M. E. church was organized, Mr. Hoover and the entire family united with the church as charter members. For many years until the infirmities of his age prohibited his attendance he was active in the Odd Fellow Lodge. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. H. M. Williams, of Piqua, and one son, William G., of Covington. Forrest R. preceded his father in death several years ago and Clarence died in infancy.
Six grandchildren, Mrs. Helen Brumbaugh, of Covington, Mrs. Charles Metzger, of Hamilton, Charles Williams and Dwight Williams of Piqua, Farrin Hoover of Urbana, Ill., and Margaret Phillis, of Piqua, also survive as do eleven great grandchildren.
