Ashley Hewgley volunteered for the Civil War at 18 years of age. His regiment having to wade through Stones River to get to the battlefield for the battle of Murfreesboro suffered exposure while they were waiting for orders to go to the front lines. They were not sent, but Ashley developed pneumonia and was discharged from the army. He died at the home of his father Feb 12 1863 about six weeks after discharge. Information from his grand niece Sue Frances Hewgley.
