Alice R. Menzel, age 105, passed Nov. 5, 2003, at the River Pines Center, of complications from a fall at home. She had been living with a daughter, Vera Eichstaedt, in Amherst.

Services Sunday at Boston Funeral Home, the Rev. Ed Hunt officiating. Burial Monday at Restlawn Memorial Park in Wood County.

Mrs. Menzel was born March 16, 1898 in Chelsea in Taylor County, WI, daughter of Henry and Augusta (Wagner) Bruce. She attended school in Park Falls and the Stevens Point Normal School.

Married Carl Menzel in 1917. He died in 1983.

She was active during her earlier years in Arbutus Chapter 52, order of the Eastern Star, and Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church. In earlier years she was also involved in PTA and band parents. At age 104 she joined the Daughters of the American Revolution, the oldest member ever admitted to the DAR. Her mother, Augusta Bruce of Stevens Point, who died Feb. 10, 1974, at the age of 104, was the last survivor of the Peshtigo fire of 1871, which took the lives of more than 1,000 people.

Survivors include two daughters, Vera Eichstaedt and Betty (Jack) Alleman, both of rural Amherst; two sons, Bruce (Eileen), Stevens Point, and Gerald (Patricia), Fox River Grove, IL; 17 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by one daughter, Jane Burgess; one son, Harold "Bud;" an infant daughter; four brothers; three sisters; and two half-brothers.
