In Massachusetts, speculators were encouraging settlers to move into the Bedford area (later Granville). It was determined to donate a certain proportion of the land in Bedford to those who would come and settle. Thus encouraged, many left Connecticut for this area of Massachusetts. "In some way David Rose, who lived in Durham, in the Colony of Connecticut, heard about this Promised Land. He came to Bedford. Looked the place over. Liked it so well that he picked out his 100 acres, built a cabin, started his clearing and moved his family there. He also purchased 1500 acres more in 1741. Here is the interesting part. Either David Rose had great powers of persuasion, or else he was looked up to as a man of good judgment, for as a result of his settling in Bedford no less than twenty-six other families very soon came from Durham to the 'new Township.' "(Wilson, History of Granville, Mass., pp. 27-28).
His name appears on the petition 1749, filed in the General Court, requesting that their power to raise taxes be renewed. Also appear on the list are Justus Rose, Daniel Rose and John Rose.
It is obvious from the records that Deacon David Rose was a much respected man. He was Selectman in 1754, Tithingman, and served the town in many other ways.
