August Jacob was born to Lewis and Julia Zangmeister Gebhart in Zanesville, Ohio. He had two older sisters, Emma H.(b.1856) and Louisa M.(b.1860) and one older brother, George W.(b.1862). Two other sisters, Matilda J.(1854-1855)and Katinka B.(1858-1862), had died before his birth.

Per the June 1880 census, the family still resided in Zanesville, on Market Street, where father, Lewis, is a saloon keeper. August had four more siblings by this time, Amelia (b.1867), Herman (b.1868), Julia M.(b.1870) and finally Christin (b. 1873).

According to the 1883 and 1890 Zanesville City Directories, August was a cigar maker for W.B. Hubbell. He still resided with the family on Market Street.

In the 1894 Zanesville City Directory, August is still a cigar maker. He and his mother, Julia, are reported to have lived on West End Avenue while father, Lewis and sister, Amelia resided at the Market Street address.

In the 1896 Zanesville City Directory, August is still a cigar maker, working for D.R. Worstall and resided at 82 Elm Street. Per the 1900 federal census, August, lived alone on Augusta Street in a house that he owned with a mortgage. His sister Julia Factor and her family lived on the same street. His mother lived with sister, Amelia Gille and her family close by at 102 West End Avenue.

Per city directories 1901-1919, August continued to work as a cigar maker and lived at various locations in Zanesville.

With the death early today of August Gebhardt, 72, police launched an investigation into the accident in which he was run over on the Fifth street bridge by an automobile driven by Miss Eleanor Paul, 2005 North Maple avenue.

Gebhardt's death occurred this morning in Good Samaritan Hospital from a fractured skull sustained in the accident last night. Miss Paul told police the man was lying in the roadway of the bridge about 50 feet from Linden avenue and that she did not see him until too late to swerve her machine.

She was driving toward the Terrace when wheels of the car passed over the man's head. Police today questioned several persons in an effort to determine the accident cause. Why the man should be lying in the path of motor traffic remains a mystery, although the theory was advanced that he may have suffered a stroke. A post-mortem may be conducted to determine if this was the case. The body is at Bateman funeral home where the funeral will be held at 10:30 Friday morning, Rev. Homer McDaniel officiating. Burial at Greenwood.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Louis Martin of Fultonham, Mrs. A.L. Gille of Ridge avenue, city. and Mrs. Julia Factor of Tiffin. Another sister, Mrs. Emma Deavers, died Monday; a brother, Christ Gebhardt, of this city, also survives.
