Kate was the daughter of Martin Walsh and Bridget Duffy of Co. Mayo, Ireland. One of 9 sisters that came to the United States about 1885 to Illinois. Kate and 6 of her sisters married and settled in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, and lived out their lives here. The other two went to Chicago.

John and Kate had 6 children: John James Jr., Mary Catherine Elizabeth (Davidson), Margaret Helen (Nierhoff), Clara E. (Lederle), Harry Edward Sr., and Loretta W. (Hennessy).
