He was an illegal alien, and claimed to have been born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In actuality, he was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and he came to the USA in the mid 1930's, and was never legally admitted to the USA.

His first wife was Flora Belle (Ruth) Wright Beyerle, they were married 28 Jan 1936 in Seattle, WA. They had 3 children, all born in Portland.

He married Mattie Florence Holland in March 1949 in Bellingham, WA. They had 3 children, plus he adopted Mattie's son from her previous marriage.

His Native ancestry was a "deep dark secret", and it is very uncertain if he knew that his maternal grandmother was half Native American. It seems that in Canada, having Native ancestry is NOT considered to be a good thing.

His 1st cousin, in Saskatchewan, was horrified when it was proven that his mother was 1/4 Native, and he broke off all contact, stating that "You have ruined my memories of my mother".
