John C. Lazenby, a professor of education for 33 years at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and its predecessor colleges before retiring in 1956, died Saturday of complications of age. He was 99.
Lazenby, who was born in Lawrenceburg, Ind., earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Indiana and a masters's degree in 1923 from the University of Chicago.
He then came to the State Normal School in Milwaukee to teach. That school became the Milwaukee State Teachers College, and Lazenby was active in having the college accredited.
The institution was renamed the Wisconsin State College, which eventually became UWM.
He had lived at the Villa Clement Nursing Home, 9047 W. Greenfield Ave., West Allis, for about 10 years.
Lazenby was active on a committee that prepared for the changeover to UWM.
He helped organize the Beta Omicron chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, a national honorary education fraternity, and served as its adviser for 23 years.
By the time he retired, he was the director of the secondary education division at UWM.
After his retirement, he helped organize the Retired Teachers Organization at UWM and served as its president.
He also was a member of the Kenwood Methodist Church, the Methodist Federation for Social Action and Phi Delta Kappa.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Dings of Brookfield.
Services will be held at 8.p.m. Monday at the Fass Funeral Home, 3601 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Wanderers Rest Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to Kenwood Methodist Church or to the Kappa Delta Pi scholarship fund in care of UWM.
