Mr. Kennedy was born in Florence, the son of the late Arthur Bair "AB" and Vivian Ellen McFadden Kennedy. He attended Florence public schools and Florence-Darlington Technical College. He retired from the City of Florence Wastewater Treatment Plant after 31 years. He was a former member of the Sardis-Timmonsville Fire Department as engine captain and also a member of the Timmonsville Rescue Squad. Mr. Kennedy was a member of Faith Southern Methodist Church and attended Cartersville Baptist Church.

He was married to the late Mamie Dianne Saverance Kennedy.

"Aday," as he was lovingly known by his grandchildren, is survived by a son, Michael Scott (Stacy) Kennedy; two grandchildren, Michael Scott Kennedy Jr. and Dustin Tyler Kennedy; two sisters, Mary Eunice Kennedy Rogers (Charles) and Julia Ellen Kennedy Harper (David); and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Eugene Kennedy.
