JAMES P. McGURN
James P. McGurn, 80, a former resident of 206 Division St., Bennington, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at the Bennington Convalescent Center.
Born in Bennington April 14, 1897, son of the late John P. and Helen (Hawthorne) McGurn, he received his education in the Bennington schools.
Mr. McGurn was employed for several years at the former Cooper Kneedle Shop and later at the Polygraphic Co. in North Bennington, until the time of his retirement.
He also operated the "popcorn wagon" business on Main Street for several years, a business started by his father and grandfather at the turn of the century.
Married to the former Agnes Stone in Bennington, Mrs. McGurn died in 1946. He then married Lyda (LaFlamme) Gauthier on Nov 1, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church.
In earlier years he was a member of Council 307, K of C and also the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mr. McGurn was also a member of the Bennington Fire Department during the horse drawn era.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, James R. Sr., of Bennington; three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Helen Galipeau of Bennington; two step-daughters, Mrs. Frederick (Lorraine) Young of Bennington and Mrs. Frank (Jeanette) Paul of Nesquehoning, Pa.; two stepsons, J. Paul Gauthier of Shaftsbury and Jerome E. Gauthier of Brookfield, Ill.; several stepgrandchildren; and one step great grandson. A daughter, Martha McGurn, died several years ago.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday morning at 9:30 with a prayer and from Sacred Heart Church at 10 am, where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
Friends may call at the funeral home 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 tonight, when the family will be in attendance. The Wake Service will be held tonight at 8.
Burial will be in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Should friends desire, contributions in Mr. McGurn's memory may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Vermont Heart Associatin thrugh the funeral home office.
