Merrill Marshall Utterback was born 15 Jun 1874 in Malvern, Mills Co., Iowa, USA to David Spencer Utterback and Delilah Creech. He married 1) Etta Hagerty on 28 Feb 1894 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa.
Merrill and Etta had the following children:
1. Robert Utterback, b. 10 Jan 1895, d. before 1900.
2. Merle Utterback (name changed to Roy Ames), b. 16 Apr 1897, d. 8 Aug 1977; m. Leona Augusta Whitlock.
3. Helen Utterback (name changed to Helen Gladys Hansen), b. 30 Mar 1899, d. 6 Mar 1987; m. Alfred Pedersen. (see Helen Gladys Hansen Pedersen (1899 - 1987) )
Etta passed away before the 1900 Census, leaving 2 small children. Merrill’s parents had already moved to California and Etta’s sisters would not take the children. Merrill was a teamster - hauled freight with a team and wagon - and could not care for a 3 year-old and a one-year old, so he put them in an orphanage in Council Bluffs. After he remarried, he went back to get them but they had been adopted. Merle was renamed Roy Ames by his adoptive parents, Albro Joseph Ames and Marie Antoinette Sleer. Helen was adopted by Frederick N. and Fredericke Hansen and took the name Helen Gladys Hansen; she married Alfred Pedar Pederson.

Merrill then married 2) the widow Margret "Maggie" (Fink) Bergman on 23 Mar 1904 in Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa. She had five children from her marriage to John Bergman: Mary Anna “Mamie”, John, Rena, Fritz “Fred”, and Gertrude.
Merrill and Maggie had the following children:
1. Delilah Pearl May Utterback, b. 14 Mar 1903, d. 23 Dec 1981; m. Charles Milford Cummings.
2. Viola Mildred Utterback, b. 1905, d. 21 Sep 1978; m. 1) Clyde Thomas Kennedy, 2) Wilfred N. Gregory.
3. David Merrill Utterback, b. 22 Oct 1909, d. 9 Mar 1973; m. Margaret Linnea Nelson.
