A native of Truetlen County, GA, he had lived in Nassau County for most of his life. He was a former worker in the Nassau County Roads Maintenance Department. He was a member of Springhill Baptist Church and enjoyed attending his Sunday school class. He was also in the Seekers Singles Group of the Nassau County Council on Aging.
Besides his parents Curtis and Kizzy Smith Avery, he was predeceased by a brother, Victory Avery, and a sister, Geraldine Gore.
Survivors include a sister, two brothers, a sister-in-law who was his primary caretaker, and several nieces and nephews.
Interment was held later in the church cemetery after a memorial service at Springhill Baptist Church on Nassauville Rd, Fernandina Beach, FL.
