Joe G. Harker, Sr., 79 of Kirksville, MO, passed away unexpectedly September 8, 1997, at his home.

The son of Louie Orville and Ruby Jane Brookhart Harker, he was born August 19, 1918, in Memphis, MO.

On June 30, 1940, in Lancaster, MO, he was united in marriage to Louella Mathes, who survives.

Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Donald Richard and Rose Harker of Kirisbille, MO; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Raymond Schneider of Kirksville, MO; eight grandchildren, Deanna DeVolld, Melissa Miller, Ashley Harker, Bethanie Schneider, and Angela Schneider, all of Kirksville, MO, Trey Harker of Lee's Summit, MO, Jay Harker of Dickinson, TX, and Justin Harker of Houston, TX; and four great-grandchildren, Rebekka and Regan Harker, both of Lee's Summit, MO, and Kimberlynn and Austin Harker, both of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Joe G. Harker, Jr.; and two brothers, James and John Harker.

Joe was raised in Scotland County, MO, and received his education in the Memphis public schools. He severed in the United States Army during World War II. In 1945 he moved to Kirksville, MO, and purchased Siegles Grocery Store which he operated for three years. He moved to Greentop, MO, in 1950 and began framing. He was also employed with the Kirksville State Teachers College for 29 years, as a plumber, before retiring in 1979.

Joe had a great love for this family and enjoyed his garden.

He was a member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Memphis, MO.

Funeral services were held September 11, 1997, at the Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, MO. The Reverend Ralph Wheeler officiated. Music was provided by Cheyrl Newland. She played the organ and sang. Burial was in the Memphis City Cemetery, Memphis, MO.

Pallbearers were Trey Harker, Jay Harker, Justin Harker, Claude DeVolld, Jason Miller, and Bill Harker. Travis-Noe Funeral Home, Kirkville, MO, was in charge of arrangements.
