Andrew McGahey (McGahee) was born in (1761) in Pennsylvania and died between 1788 and 1790 in Vincennes, Knox Co., Indiana. Andrew was married before 1782 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania to Mary Craig (daughter of Samuel Craige, Sr. and Elizabeth McDonald). Mary was born in (1763) in Pennsylvania and died on October 18, 1837 in Greene City, Greene Co., Illinois. Revolutionary War Pension Application: PA W23530. -- In all the documents that I have found on Andrew, the spelling of McGahee or McGahey is used. Not once could I find his signature, but instead Andrew left his "X" mark. Andrew probably couldn't read or write, so the spelling of his last name was left in the hands of those that could. This would account for why Andrew's last name was at most times spelled McGahee. His brother William spelled his name many times as McGahey and McGaughey. Andrew's sister, Margaret, only used McGaughey as her maiden name, and many of her descendants were give the middle name of McGaughey. -- Andrew McGahee (his name borne on the Pennsylvania records as McGahey) enlisted sometime in 1776, served as a private in the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment, commanded by Colonel Richard Humpton, and continued in service until the close of the war. During the latter years of the Revolutionary War, he was stationed at the barracks at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. One a document at the National Archives it was mentioned that Andrew was a sergeant. I found no other data proving this. -- While in the service, he was married in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to Mary Craig or Craige; the date and place of her birth were not given nor were the names of her parents. Some time after the close of the Revolutionary War, Andrew moved to the "western country;" his brother, William McGahey, moved there also. While working on his farm near Vincennes (Indian Territory), Kentucky, near the Wabash River, between the years 1788 and 1790, (exact date not given), Andrew McGahee was killed by the Indians.
