Edwin Dalrymple

Edwin Dalrymple died February 4th, 2006. He and his twin sister, Edith, were born in Llano, Texas on January 11, 1916 to Eugene James and Jessie Alexander Dalrymple. He grew up in Llano and always considered Llano his home.

Edwin Dalrymple served his country in war and in peace - flying Spitfires as a fighter pilot in World War II and serving as an FBI agent for 20 years. Throughout his life he served his family and friends, especially when they were sick or in need.

In 1936, he entered The University of Texas at Austin. In 1941 during his senior year, his country was facing threats abroad. He dropped out of school, joined the Army Air Corps, and became a fighter pilot. In March 1942, he was assigned to the 31st fighter group, which was the first American fighter group in England. They were assigned Spitfires, which he flew throughout the war. He later noted that being able to fly the Spitfire probably helped him survive the war. He flew 113 missions while stationed in England, Gibraltar, Malta and North Africa. His engine failed one day and he had to make a forced landing in a farmers field. The next day he led a flight of four that attacked 12 enemy fighters. During the fight, his Spit was damaged by debris. He made a forced landing in the same field and parked wing tip to wing tip with his plane from the day before. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the field was named Dalrymple Field. He later was awarded an oak leaf cluster for the DFC and the Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters. After his combat tour, he was assigned duties as a staff officer at a US airbase in Brazil training fighter pilots. He learned some Portuguese and a little bit about the night life in Rio de Janeiro. He retired as a Lt. Colonel.

When World War II was over, he returned to the United States. While visiting relatives and friends while on leave, he looked up a friend, Mildred Inks, whom he had known while living in Llano. She too had been an Air Force pilot, and, after a brief courtship, they were married at her home in Austin. They shared more than 60 wonderful years together.

In January 1947, Edwin graduated from UT and joined the FBI as a special agent. While in the FBI, the couple lived in Newark, New Jersey and Washington D.C. where Edwin supervised 150 agents monitoring Soviet activities. In 1957, he transferred to the FBI office in Houston to be closer to family. During the FBI years, three children were born to Edwin and Mildred.

On his retirement from the FBI, they moved to Austin to fulfill a lifelong dream of returning to live in the Hill Country. Edwin began work as the first Investigator for the Texas State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. During retirement, he made many trips to England and Scotland and supported Mildred in her tennis activities. He became very active in the 31st Fighter Group reunions, and also in Mildred's Women's Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) activities and reunions. He also traced the Dalrymple family roots to Scotland, where he led his family in reconnecting with distant Dalrymple relatives.

Edwin was predeceased by his brother Tate and sisters Emily and Edith. He is survived by his "favorite" wife, Mildred Inks Dalrymple, son Dennis Dalrymple and wife Billie, daughter Gail Dalrymple, son Tom Dalrymple and wife Elisa and six grandchildren: Neil Dalrymple and wife Heather, Holly Dalrymple, Travis Dalrymple, Scott Richter, Tracy Dalrymple, and Peter Richter, and one great-grand child, Austin Dalrymple.

Services were Wednesday, February 8th, 2006 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Drive, Austin, Texas. Graveside services followed at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Georgetown, Texas. [Edited from an obituary published in the Austin American-Statesman on 2/7/2006.]
