Phyllis attended the local Atlantic City public schools, Atlantic Community College and was a graduate of Glassboro State College. During the 60's, she worked for the Breakers Hotel as an elevator operator and front desk clerk. She was briefly employed at the Atlantic City Medical Center and Hoffman's Hardware Store. In the late 70's, she began her employment with Atlantic County Vocational School, where she worked as an Administrative Secretary for 35 years. A dedicated woman of God, she fellowshipped at Allen AME Church in Atlantic City for many years. She then attended Mt. Laurel AME in York Town, and also worshipped at Grant AME Church in Chiselhurst. She was presently a dedicated and tithing member at St. Paul AME Church, Pleasantville. She served faithfully at these churches, having been Church Secretary, working with the Steward Board, and the Pastor's Aide.
She was predeceased by her brother Robert Jones and her sister, Larue Jones. She leaves to cherish fond memories: her spouse, Gary L. Smiley of Egg Harbor City; longtime friend, Willard Allen of Mays Landing; her children, Kenneth P. Smith (Brenda) of Atlantic City, Timothy D. Duckery of Valley Lee, MD, Anthony D. G. Allen of Philadelphia, Derrick L. Gilbert (Karen) of Pleasantville, Stephen T. Gilbert of Mays Landing, Desiree D. Barimah (Nana) of Mays Landing, Tracey Smiley Dixon of Pleasantville, and Janele K. Austin (Darian) of Mays Landing; brother, Donald Gilbert (Brenda) of Bensalem, PA; four special sisters, Brenda Gilbert, Patricia Couplin, Rocita Burnett and Beverly Coles; a special friend, Caz Minor of Newtonville; 28 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held 11AM Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at St. Paul AME Church, 1203 Harrison Avenue, Pleasantville, where friends may call from 9AM. Burial will be in Atlantic County Veteran's Cemetery, Estell Manor. Arrangements entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Home, Atlantic City.
