George Betterly, 91, of Battle Creek, died Monday, January
29, 2007, at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence.
He was born in Battle Creek on January 5, 1916 the son of G. Walter and Ursula (Berry) Betterly. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1934. George served his country as a member of the United States Army during WWII.
George and his wife, Margaret, were owners of Greensmith Florist, on Emmett St., until 1978, when Roger Jacobs
purchased the business. George married Margaret Kipp in Battle Creek on July 15, 1939. He is survived by his wife
of 67 years, three daughters, Marilyn Birdsall of Kalamazoo, Nancy (Fred) Reeves of Kalamazoo and Susan (Steve) Abbott of Louisville, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Jeff (Dawn) Jackson, Susan (Scott) VanLoo, Bill (Laura) Reeves, Steve (Susan) Mott, Leslie (Ron) Osborne and David
Tara) Moss; eight greatgrandchildren, Austin, Alyssa,
Samuel, Lindsay, Lydia, Phillip, Allison and Landon, also two sisters, June Simmons of Oakland, California and Mary
Williams of Sun City, California and a cousin, Dorcas
"Pinky" Harris. George was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the Battle Creek Lodge #12 *&A.M, and served as its
Worshipful Master, at the time of the Lodge's 100th
anniversary in 1947. He also served as the Pennfield Township Clerk, and was a member of the Y-Center Swim Club.
At the request of the family, friends may call at the Farley- Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home on Wednesday where they will be received by the family from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Funeral services to celebrate George's life will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, February 1, 2007 at the funeral home with
Rev. Joy E. Rogers, Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church
officiating. Interment will be private for the family at Reese Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Good Samaritan Hospice Residence or St. Thomas Episcopal Church. www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
