Parham Callaway birthday
A family reunion was held at the home of Mr. James S. Callaway last week to celebrate the eighty-first birthday of his father, Mr. Parham Callaway, of Eminence. There were present the following five sons and their wives: James S. and S. W. Callaway, of this city; R. A. Callaway, of Coldwater, Kansas, and E. P. Callaway, of Eminence. About fifty-eight guests, including twenty grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren, and many other relatives were present.
Mr. Parham Callaway’s family is a large one, and is historical and patriotic as well. He is the only grandchild living of Richard Callaway, one of the famous founders of Kentucky, and he is also relative of Daniel Boone.
Mr. James S. Callaway has in his possession the old family bible of Richard Callaway, containing the dates of the births of his family, and also those of his numerous slaves. Mr. Parham Callaway’s father was deeded six hundred and forty acres where the little town of Smithfield now stands, for his service in the Legislature.
The dinner was elaborate and was partly prepared by the old family cook, who was a slave. Mr. Parham Callaway sat at one table surrounded by his sons and their wives, and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Callaway. This table was decorated in purple and white, while at another table were his numerous grandchildren. The decorations at the latter were scarlet and white. The great grand-children were served at the third table. After dinner the family sat for a picture and at the close of the day the Rev. M. P. Hunt conducted services, with a beautiful tribute to the aged grandfather and great-grandfather.
