James was the son of William Templeton Cole and Rachel Berry.
He married Nancy Louisa Brock on February 8, 1868. Nancy was the daughter of Jesse R. Brock and Depsey Jane Berry.
James owned a meat packing house in Fannin County, Georgia next to the railroad tracks at a place known as Cole's Crossing.
After Louisy died he moved to Marble. Until her death his grandsons Guss and Rass lived with him.
He was the father of Martha, William, Laura, Rachel, Mary Alice, John, Ida, and Georgiann.
His second wife was Sarah Thurmond.
