STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Alex A. Bonomi Sr., 70, of Eltingville, whose family was his passion, died yesterday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville.

Born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, he was a graduate of Eli Whitney High School. He lived in Brooklyn until settling in Eltingville in 1987.

Mr. Bonomi served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962, stationed in Germany.

Mr. Bonomi was an operations supervisor for Eagle Electric Manufacturing Co. in L.I. City, Queens, from 1964 to 1988. He then worked for Waldes TRUARC in New Jersey, until retiring in 1996.

Giving true meaning to the term family man, he was the caregiver for his six grandchildren, taking them to and from school, helping with their homework, making their meals, telling them stories and listening to theirs. In turn, he became extremely close to his daughters-in-law, Tina and Donna Bonomi, and his son-in-law, Brian Thomas.

Mr. Bonomi also showed his love for family by establishing a tradition called "Tuesday Dinner," when his door was open for all of them to come and enjoy the dishes he cooked, especially his eggplant lasagna and northern Italian specialties from Cavizzana, Italy, his ancestral home.

He was a parishioner of Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville.

Mr. Bonomi's son, Alex A. Jr., died in 1996.

Surviving, along with his grandchildren, are his wife of 47 years, the former Irene O'Keefe; his son, Vincent; his daughter, Christine Thomas, and his sister, Cesira Giacomoni.

The funeral will be Monday from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Child Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
