Lewis died from injuries he suffered in a mid-January fire at the A J Looker restaurant and grocery in Riverdale, Michigan. He suffered burns to his arms and hands, back and chest and he seemed to be doing OK, but took a turn for the worst and passed away.

He married Mable Viola Taft on 03 April 1895 in Crystal, Montcalm Co, Michigan. She subsequently married Dewitt Clayton Murtaugh.
