James Luther Gilkerson is the son of James Harvey Gilkerson and Elizabeth Magdaline Echard. He married first Blanch May Taylor on 29 December 1909 in Augusta, Virginia.
After her death he married Myrtle Elizabeth Cunningham Brown also a recent widow. They were married in Roanoke, Virginia on 16 June 1945.
James worked on the railroad most of his life and had no known children. He is buried in the Evergreen cemetery next to his second wife, Myrtle. His name is listed on his first wife's memorial with an incorrect birth year of 1881.
