Batteal's parents set out for Kentucky when he was very young child. Varying accounts indicate that either because Batteal became seriously ill, or because of the fear of Indians, the young boy was left in the care of his aunt and uncle, Jane Newell Vance and William Vance. His parents continued on to Kentucky, but returned for Batteal a few years later. However, by that time he had grown attached to his aunt and uncle and refused to leave them. Jane and William Vance agreed to raise Batteal. He was never reunited with his family. By the time Batteal was a young man, his parents and siblings had moved to Missouri from Kentucky. Batteal set out to visit them but learned enroute that his parents had died, and instead went to Ohio where he joined the military and had a distinguished career. He remained in Ohio, where he married and raised a family. In 1823 Batteal patented 6014 acres in Ohio, as part of a military land warrant issued to the heirs of Capt.
