RETIRED MERCHANT - FARMER DIES HERE IN 100th YEAR
George Washington Stephens*, 99, retired merchant and farmer of 443 -South Fourth street,who would have marked his 100 birthday on June 9, died at 8:40 o'clock this morning at his residence.He had been ill for approximately two years.He was born in Whitley county, had lived here since 1920 and was a member of the Methodist church. Mr. Stephens was an ardent sports fan interested through the years in football, basketball, and practically all other games, and boasted three or four years ago he had never missed a broadcast of a Cincinnati Redlegs game. He was engaged for most of his life as a grocer. Survivors are three sons, Everett Stephens and Lawrence Stephens, both of Danville, and Elmer Stephens, New Port Richey, Fla.; seven daughters, Mrs. George E. Guffey, Miss Loretta Stephens and Mrs. Beulah Goldston, all of Danville; Mrs. Belle Clark, Whitley City; Mrs. Archie Waldrupe. Durham, W C.; Mrs. C. E. McSparin, Smyrna, Ga., and Mrs. Mae Haynes, St.. Louis, Mo.; two brother, James M. Stephens, Columbus, Ohio, and L. D. Stephens, Pine Knot; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Centenary Methodist Church by Dr. Albert W. Sweazy, the pastor. Burial will be in Bellevue cemetery. Friends may call at Stith funeral Home on Friday.
