She was born in Sanford on April 5, 1921, the daughter of Lloyd W. and Doris (Hardwick) Batchelder. She attended Sanford schools, was a graduate of Sanford High School and a graduate of Nasson College in Springvale.
She lived in Farmington, N.H., for several years, where she taught high school English and home economics, and served as chairman of the school board.
In 1967, she and her husband, Albert W. Baker, moved into her family homestead in Sanford, where they raised their family. They also maintained a summer home in Wells Beach. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Sanford schools for several years.
She was an active member of the North Parish Congregational Church, where she participated in many church functions, especially the Monday Nighters group. She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star in Farmington. In her youth, she was a competitive equestrian in dressage.
In their retirement, Thelma and Albert enjoyed traveling, taking many bus trips and a trip and cruise around the Hawaiian islands. She was predeceased by her husband in 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Matthew B. Baker and his wife, Tigg Frieh of Wells, Peter M. Baker and his wife, Christine, of Sanford; her former daughter-in-law, Kathy Farber of Wells; grandson, Jason Baker of Wells, and granddaughters, Megan Baker and Ashley Baker, both of Sanford.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, where a funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the spring in Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.
