Family and friends mourn the loss of George L. Domínguez a resident of Albuquerque since 1943, who passed away on December 11, 2011 at 95 years of age.
Mr. Domínguez is survived by his wife and devoted companion of 76 years, Josephine Domínguez.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Domínguez retired from the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District in July of 1970 after 35 years of distinguished service. During his years with the Corps he held many and varied assignments in the areas of administration, engineering and construction. Mr. Domínguez joined the Corps in 1936 at the Tucumcari District, working on the construction of Conchas Dam. George rose through the ranks and for the 17 years prior to his retirement he served as Personnel Officer for the District. Mr. Domínguez received many awards and citations for his outstanding service to the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1992 he was inducted into the Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees for the Corps of Engineers. In his significant contributions in placing women and minorities in positions which led to upward mobility long before the establishment of formal Equal Employment Opportunity programs. Mr. Domínguez was also recognized for his successful recruiting of engineers for the Corps from throughout the country and overseas, during the construction of 12 Atlas Missile Complexes, one of the largest and most important projects in the Albuquerque District's history. Mr. Domínguez's tenure with the Corps was interrupted by a tour of duty with the United States Marine Corps, 6th Marine Division during World War II. Mr. Domínguez served in Guadalcanal, Guam, Okinawa and the initial occupation of Japan as well as the formal surrender of the Japanese at Yokosuka Naval Base on September 2, 1945. Mr. Domínguez was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 6th Marine Division Association, NARFE and the Society of American Military Engineers.
A loving father and grandfather, Mr. Domínguez is survived by his son, Don and his wife, Phyllis of Midland, TX, son, Larry and his wife, Margaret of Annandale, VA, daughter, Rita Chávez and her husband, Lolo, daughter, Barbara Calderon of Albuquerque, as well as seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren.

A Rosary will be recited at French University Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 16, 2011 followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mr. Domínguez's grandchildren, Kathy Kilgore, Michael Domínguez, Kim Domínguez, Marie Therese Domínguez, Christa Gormley, Damian Calderon, Melanie Calderon and Michael Morrow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of George Domínguez to Mesa Arriba Assisted Living Facility, 11024 Montgomery NE #176 Albuquerque, NM 87111.
