Theodore Perry Woods was born September 17, 1840, in Gibson County, Indiana, the son of Joshua Embree Woods and Eliza Jane Stewart.

In 1850 and 1860, Theodore was listed in the census records as living with his parents and siblings. They are living in the town of Shiloh, Texas in 1860. On August 15, 1860, Theodore married Sarah Ellen Baker, who was born August 1844 in Missouri. A year and a half later, he joined Company K, 9th Regiment, of the Texas Cavalry on October 14, 1861 and fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. He was listed as a prisoner of war on April 2, 1863, captured at Franklin, Tennessee, and was discharged April 16, 1863. By 1870, Theodore was age 29, and living in Lone Oak, Texas (Hunt County) with his wife Sarah, age 26, and their 4 children, all born in Texas: Margaret, age 9; Joseph Embree, age 5; William Perry, age 3; and Charles, age 5 months.

Theodore died on September 12, 1872 in Hunt County, Texas and was buried there in the Stewart Cemetery. Theodore and Sarah's fifth child, Theodore Porter, was born after Theodore died. In 1900, Theodore's widow, Sarah E. Greene, age 56, was living in Denton County, Texas with her son, William Perry Woods.
