Howard R. Kissell, 93, West Lafayette, died at 7:10 PM, Dec. 30, 2002 in Westminster Health Care. Born March 6, 1909 in Columbus Grove, OH, he graduated from Columbus Grove High School, received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Purdue University in 1931, and received his master's from Ohio State University in 1936. He played football for Purdue University from 1928 to 1930. He returned to West Lafayette to live at Westminster from Florida in 1994. He married Margery Mathias on Dec. 28, 1932, in Elkhart; she died Dec. 21, 1991. Mr. Kissell served in the Naval Reserve from 1942 to 1946 as a lieutenant commander. He was director of personnel at Brown Rubber. He later was a Realtor at Lux Agency from 1962 until his retirement several years ago. He also was an insurance broker. He was an athletic director and football coach at Painesville, OH, Findley College, Muskegon College, and Bunker Hill United States Air Reserve in Peru. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Gimlet Club, a former member of Kiwanas Club, John Purdue Club, and Elks. He was a member of the Ohio College Football Coaches Hall of Fame, National Football Shrine, and College Football Hall of Fame for Coaching, and North and South Football Shrine in Dallas, TX. Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Kissell of Monticello; a son, Stephen J. Kissell of Portland, ME; three grandchildren, Dianne (Mrs. Skip) Francis, Kristen Kissell, and John Stephen Kissell; a great-granddaughter and a great-grandson. Service Jan. 10, 2003, in Central Presbyterian Church, the Rev. David Roquemore officiating. Internment Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens Mausoleum; Soller-Baker West Lafayette funeral directors in charge of arrangements.
