Francis "Frank" McGee was the son of (Father) John McGee and Mary Munday. Some records give Frank as being born on February 26, 1804. (His cemetery marker gives the date as February 4, 1804.) He was probably born in Virginia rather than North Carolina as many have recorded. His mother died leaving several young children ages three to twelve years of age. The youngest son, William Kelly McGee, was "bound out", or indentured to a Mr. Greenlee, and perhaps the others were also. His father, John, married again and raised another family. The first family of McGees was born in Virginia; the second in North Carolina. All were raised in western North Carolina.

Francis Frank McGee was a Confederate Colonel, and was known as "Colonel Frank". He was married twice. His first wife was Sara Jane "Callie" Ledford. He was said to have been the first Sheriff of Cherokee County, North Carolina, and spent his last days near Ducktown, Tennessee. He died March 18, 1875 and is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Ducktown, Polk County, Tennessee.
