William served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Following the war, he left his remaining family in Mississippi, and headed west.

He married Amanda Augusta Davis on June 17, 1877, in Blanco Co., Texas. They had seven children: Lula Cornelia, Carrie Mae, William Silas Jr., James Gaither, Alberta Wood, Audie Guin (died young), and Walter Morris.

On trip hauling freight from south Texas to the north, Silas suddenly became ill and died. He is buried in an unmarked grave along the trail, somewhere in Hill County, Texas.

After William went west, he evidently had no further contact with his family back in Mississippi. A few years ago while researching the Mississippi Gastons, I purchased a Lowndes Co. Marriage book from a local lady in Caldonia. A couple of weeks later I received a letter from another lady in Caldonia who turned out to be a 3rd cousin. She told me the rest of the family in Mississippi, never knew what happened to William and was so happy to finally learn about his life.
