Edna Fern Moffett, 100, of Tustin, CA, passed away September 5, 1998, following a major stroke.

Edna was born on a farm just outside Bushnell, IL, March 11, 1898.

In 1903 her parents, Samuel and Anna Boozel moved their family to northeastern Missouri, where farm land was more affordable. They bought their farm and settled in the community of Memphis, MO. Edna and her sisters, Alta, Jennie, and Hazel, attended country school. She rode her horse across fields to get there- opening and closing seven gates on her way. Edna loved school and dreamed of being a teacher. But like many young women of her generation, continuing education was not seen as an option.

Edna worked as a cook and mother's helper before marrying her first husband, Pearl Campbell. She had one child, a daughter, Juanita, and became the step-mother to Pearl's children, Irene, Evelyn, Dora, Mary and George. Edna and Pearl opened a trucking company and hauled freight to St. Louis and Chicago while working their own 50 acre farm and selling corn and tomatoes to the neighboring communities.

Edna attributed her longevity to hard work and Christian living.

After selling the trucking company she went to work for the Pheasant Aircraft Company, and then joined the Moffett Implement Company where she worked six days a week for 21 years, retiring in 1965 at age 67.

Her husband had passed away in the early 50's and in 1967 she married Alva Moffett. She and Alva loved to go fishing in Minnesota and to baseball games in St. Louis. They continued to live in Memphis, MO, until his death in 1974.

Edna then moved to Santa Ana, CA to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Mac McCarter. She made her home with them until they passed away four and a half years ago. At the time of her death, Edna was living in an assisted living center, Tustin Hacienda Home, in Tustin, CA, where her granddaughter, Moneen McCarter-Becerra, watched over her care. Edna lost her sight to macular degeneration in 1981. With the help of the Braille Institute and other organizations for the visually impaired she was able to learn to live with her disability.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 19, 1998, at Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO.
