Col. Gerard Alexander was born on 12 Dec 1773 in Prince William County, Virginia. He married first Elizabeth Ashton Alexander, daughter of Col. William Alexander and Sigismunda Mary Massey, circa 1795. Gerard Alexander made a deed of gift to his son, Col. Gerard Alexanderon 1 Oct 1795 in Prince William County, Virginia, described as "561 acres bought from Philip Fitzhugh being part of Benton's tract." This was probably a wedding gift.

On 13 Feb 1812 Major Gerard Alexander was unanimously recommended to be commissioned Colonel of the 89th Regiment of the Virginia Militia to replace Col. William Tyler at Prince William County, Virginia.

Shortly before his second marriage Gerard made a deed of gift on 25 Aug 1819 at Fairfax County, Virginia, transferring the property he inherited from his father to his children: Frances, Edward Clarendon, Henrietta, Sigismunda, Henry Ashton, Sarah Foote, Ann Foote, and Lawrence Gibbons. He executed a deed on the same day, 25 Aug 1819 at Prince William County, Virginia, giving the slaves "I received from their deceased mother" to their children.

Gerard married second Matilda Ann(e) Douglass, daughter of Benjamin Douglass and Anne Ward Middleton, on 2 Sep 1819 at Greenville, Prince William County, Virginia.

The Trustees of Christopher Clark sold 450 acres on the waters of Buffalo Creek to Gerard Alexander of Campbell Co. on 31 Jan 1827 at Bedford County, Virginia, 371840,-791609.

Gerard married third Elizabeth (Innes) Alexander, daughter of Judge Harry Innes and Elizabeth Callaway and widow of Thomas Casson Alexander, on 14 Mar 1837 at Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina.

Gerard died on 19 Mar 1853 at Campbell County, Virginia, at age 79 and was buried at St. Stephen's Church, Forest, Bedford County, Virginia. His estate was probated on 11 Jul 1853 at Campbell County, Virginia.
