Charles W. Dickinson was born on December 10, 1929, in San Antonio, TX, and passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his wife on November 28, 2006. His life and his passion were his career in law enforcement, and he dedicated 50 years of service to it. He served on the San Antonio Police Department for 42 years, ending that career as a Sergeant in charge of the Motorcycle Unit of the Traffic Division. During that time, he led police motorcades for many dignitaries, heads of state, political candidates and numerous other prominent people. These included the last visit to San Antonio by President John and Jacquelyn Kennedy, President Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter, Governor Michael Dukakis, President George and Barbara Bush, Vice President Dan Quayle, Governor John Connelly, the King of Spain, the President of Mexico and Pope John Paul II. He also led the motorcycle unit of the SAPD in the Fiesta Battle of Flowers and Flambeau parades for many years. After retiring from the police department, Charles served for 8 years as a deputy constable for Precinct 2 constable Bob Lew. He loved to gamble, read and travel, and he spent most of his last year traveling throughout the country with his wife. His last trip was to his favorite place, Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Gould and Thelma Fay Dickinson, his brother, Floyd Dickinson, and his grandchildren, Charles W. Dickinson, III, and Jamie Tackett. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Ann Ehrlich Dickinson; his four children, Karen Sue Vaquera and husband, Rudy, Charles W. Dickinson, Jr. and wife, Debbie, Lori Gail Collins, and Debra Diane Hamilton and husband, Mark; his six grandchildren, Raven Nicole Rivera and husband, James, Emily Rae Dickinson, Joseph Parker Dickinsosn, Taylor Ashley Collins, Skylar Corley Hamilton and Kole Patrick Harrison Hamilton; his two great-grandchildren, Kennedy Mariah Rivera and Daphne Olivia Rivera; his sister, Beverly Warren and husband, Fred; and numerous extended family and friends, including many active and retired members of the San Antonio Police Department. We would like to extend special thanks to his caregivers, "Charlie's Angels", Anna DeLeon, Estella Hernandez and Hilda Compean, who assisted his wife in providing him with loving and comforting care during the final months of his life, and to Vitas Hospice for their compassion and caring in his final days. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him, but his memory will live on forever in our hearts. Visitation will be held at Castillo Mission Funeral Home on Friday, December 1, 2006, from 1 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 2, 2006, at 10 a.m., with interment to follow at San Fernando II. Those who wish to do so may make memorial contributions to Vitas Hospice, SAPD Blue Santa Program or a charity of choice. Castillo Mission Funeral Home.
