William enlisted for Civil War army service in Company D, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 11, 1862, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County), as a private for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. He was mustered out, June 12, 1865, with Company D at Raleigh, NC, at the completion of his term of service at end of hostilities. His name is on Panel #14 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH.

His wife, Julia(nee Garrowe) was born June 14, 1842 and died May 22, 1897.

William's brother, Thomas, also served in Company D.
