Joel did not live with his father, but, rather, lived primarily with his mother, and, sometimes his uncle, Joel Almon Bascom.

(1) Ellen Cook December 19, 1870 in Salt Lake City Utah.
They had three children together:
Joel Andrew Johnson, Jr. (1873 - 1883)
Nellie Johnson (1876 - 1942)
Sarah Lamira Johnson (1879 - 1932)
(2) Georgina Day April 9, 1919 in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah.

Joel A. Johnson, Utah Pioneer, Dies
Provo - June 8. Joel Andrew Johnson, of 337 North Seventh West street, died yesterday following an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Johnson was born in Ogle county, Illinois, July 22, 1847. After their arrival in Salt Lake, the family moved to Provo and later to Iron county, where they lived for three years, and then returned to Provo.
In 1870, Mr. Johnson was married to Ellen Cook, who died in April, 1914. In 1919 he married Georgina Day, who, with two daughters born by his first wife, survive him.
Mr. Johnson was a pioneer Indian war veteran and at the time of his death was captain of the Provo post of Indian War Veterans.
Funeral services will be held from the Pioneer ward meeting house, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
