Peter K. Neufeld and Anna Friesen were living at Neuhalbstat Darpe No. 4, Sagradealka, South Russia, when their 10th child, Jacob Henry Neufeld, my great-grandfather, was born.

The family immigrated to the United States when Jacob was seven years old (1886 or 1887). Relatives took them to Odessa in a horse and buggy. They sailed (short voyage) from Odessa, Russia, in a small ship to a large town in Germany.
In Germany, they changed their money from Russian to American currency. Then they boarded a larger ship, the Elba, to make the journey to America. The voyage took nine days from Germany to New York.
The ship's captain was a man named Von Goessel. The town of Goessel, Kansas was named after the captain after it was learned he had gone down with his ship, some years after the family came over. The ship had sunk after hitting an iceberg.
The family left New York for Hillsboro, Kansas on a Santa Fe train. The Santa Fe Railroad urged the Mennonite group to come to the United States and settle in central Kansas. Some people named Klassen met the family at the Santa Fe depot in Hillsboro. C.B. Schmidt was the immigration agent.
Peter K. Neufeld rented a farm six miles south of Walton, Kansas. He died on that farm and was buried at the Grace Hill Church Cemetery.
Peter had married Anna Friesen on Nov. 24, 1860 in South Russia. They would have 10 children but only 5 of them would survive to adulthood.
