The town of Mauldin pays tribute to Magistrate William J. Cox who met his untimely death from a violent crime.
He was a member of Bethel Church for a number of years and led a consistent Christian life. Two years ago he married Miss Lizzie Vaughn, daughter of the late William W. Vaughn. The greater part of his life was spent in Mauldin where he was born in 1869.
Mr. Cox was a member of Eureka Lodge No. 66 at Reedy River, a member of Poplar Springs Camp No. 180 and Woodmen of the World in Mauldin.
Mr. Cox was a successful merchant before running for magistrate..
Mrs. Lizzie Vaughn Cox. his daughter, Lizzie Cox, his father. Lewis R. Cox, one brother, Wade H. Cox and six sisters, Mrs. Martha Louella Cox Forrester, Mrs. Leila Cox Cox, Mrs. Sallie Cox Butler, Mrs. Mamie Cox Butler, Mrs. Myrtle Cox Steadings, Mrs. Eva Cox Forrester as well as the community are left to mourn him.
Internment was held at Bethel Methodist Church on Sunday May 13, 1904.
